This plays a huge part in creating the kind of appealing ambience which draws millions of tourists to Florida every year. From commercial and government buildings to private residences, the people of Florida revel in the fact that they can open a door or window throughout the year and enjoy nature at her very best.

In this post, we’d like to share with you some tips and advice around a question we’re often asked, and that is, “What’s the proper way to irrigate?”.
Although the rules and statutes regarding water usage vary in different parts of the state and are regularly revised, the overriding aim of any legislation is to protect valuable water resources and encourage best practice. Efficient irrigation and water delivery systems are designed to keep waste down to the absolute minimum while maintaining outstanding landscape health and beauty.
How to Irrigate Properly
As would be expected for anything which needs a bespoke solution, irrigation can be an extremely complex issue, with the differing requirements of every space and the plants growing there calling for different measures. There are, however, a few basic fundamentals of effective irrigation and we’ve concentrated on turf (grasses) and trees for the following tips:
- When ornamental plants are planted out from a nursery environment the first aim is to encourage the roots to grow out from the root ball and penetrate the soil in situ. The more quickly this is achieved, the sooner the amount of water being used can be reduced and the ornamental plant left to adjust to its surroundings. If the soil in question isn’t compacted and the surrounding areas are well irrigated, then the initial period of light irrigation required to encourage root integration can be replaced with little on-going irrigation, except for during lengthy periods of drought.
- The dry periods which tend to hit Florida during the late spring and fall can drive up the amount of irrigation required by turf to maintain quality growth and a healthy appearance. The roots of grasses tend to be fairly shallow, so the turf in question needs to be irrigated at least once a week. If the soil in question has a high sand content, the rate of irrigation may have to be increased to twice a week for certain grasses.
- Deciding how long a tree takes to become established once planted within a landscape requires a calculation based upon the diameter of the trunk measured six inches from the ground. The tree will require three to four months for every inch of diameter measured, and each time the tree is irrigated, it should receive 2 to 3 gallons of water per inch.
- Once established, a tree needs to be well-irrigated over the next 12 months to maintain growth and quality during periods of little rainfall. The factors which might have an impact on the amount of irrigation needed by a tree – or indeed a shrub – include the depth of the soil, whether it has a south-facing aspect, the compaction of the soil, any slope across the planting area, the depth of the natural water table, the size of the plant and the methods used in the nursery prior to planting. These issues are typical of those taken into account when a water audit is carried out, or an irrigation system is being designed and installed.
- The impact of a dry period on an area of turf grass which is not irrigated properly can be dramatic. If the grass is a ‘drought tolerant’ variety, such as Bahiagrass, then it will fall into a state of dormancy if not irrigated, which means it will stop growing and then turn brown, resting in this state until conditions improve. Although grasses of this kind will ultimately recover, the decline in appearance when water is scarce is not something that any resident or business owner could be happy with. This is one of the reasons that smart irrigation is so effective - it can be programmed to maintain plant growth and a healthy appearance even when rainfall is scarce.
The good news for landscapers keen to work with the widest possible variety of plants and foliage is that those plants which are native to Florida do not require extra irrigation. Studies have shown that shrubs native to Florida require the same level of irrigation as those originating elsewhere.
Responsive and Effective
In simple terms, proper irrigation is best achieved when you have a well designed and built irrigation pump station and a system that responds quickly and effectively to the environmental demands of any location and the plants within it. It should be possible to take into account such conditions and issues as the depth of the plant root zone, the water-holding capacity of the soil and the degree of natural evaporation. The irrigation system should be configured to deliver an amount of water which maintains plant health, fills the soil water reservoir and doesn’t result in gravity drainage or runoff. It should have built-in irrigation technologies that allow you to monitor on-going use in real-time and make adjustments as and when they are needed. They should provide vital data and reporting so that any user – whether commercial or residential – can gauge the return on investment they are getting. For example, reducing water wastage through the early detection of leaks, which could otherwise prove to be extremely costly.
The result will be well-watered plant life and the kind of lush surroundings which Florida residents and visitors alike love so much.
